The Ted Stuart Program

The Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia (YOCVA) offer scholarships that provide local youths an opportunity to learn and play musical instruments regardless of family financial circumstances.

Eligible children are between the ages of 8 and 14 and reside in the city of Charlottesville or neighboring counties.  They must have the desire to learn and play one of the wind, brass, or string instruments that are used our orchestras.

Depending on their parents'/guardians’ gross annual income, children may receive free instrument rental and/or lessons from vetted instrument teachers. If a Ted Stuart recipient auditions into one of YOCVA's orchestras or ensembles, a full or partial tuition scholarship may be awarded. Transportation may be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Attending all private lessons and daily practices are required.  Scholarship recipients are required to audition for membership in a YOCVA orchestra or ensemble within a two-year period.

Central Virginia Music Educators Scholarship

The Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia (YOCVA) is pleased to announce the CVME’s scholarship.  This program provides full tuition to young musicians from local area schools and gives them the opportunity to perform with one of our full-symphony orchestras or advanced instrument ensembles.

Eligible students cannot be current members of any YOCVA orchestra or ensemble and should be participating in their school-based music program.

The pool of possible applicants includes music students, between ages of 8 and 18, who reside in the city of Charlottesville or the counties of Albemarle, Augusta, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, or Orange. Nomination of a student must be made by the student’s music director/teacher. Only one student per school (public or private) may be nominated for the current season. However, one string and one wind/brass student may be nominated from the same school.

Students who are nominated and then successfully audition into an orchestra or ensemble will receive a full-tuition scholarship for the upcoming performance season. The scholarship will be named for the student’s school, and the awarding of the scholarship will featured in concert programs and on our website. Participation in a YOCVA orchestra/ensemble is meant to supplement a young student’s musical education and enrich their experience in their school-based programs, not replace it.

Audition for placement in our organization is required. Nominated students must audition on an instrument that is included in our regular orchestra repertoire. Auditions are typically held in late spring of the current season, and regular YOCVA auditions rules and requirements apply.  If accepted, the student must participate for the full concert season.

The scholarship is awarded for one full concert season. If financial assistance is needed for membership in subsequent years, the student or parents can apply for need-based assistance.
