Merit-based Scholarships

Central Virginia Music Educators Scholarship

The Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia (YOCVA) is pleased to announce the CVME’s scholarship.  This program provides full tuition to young musicians from local area schools and gives them the opportunity to perform with one of our full-symphony orchestras or advanced instrument ensembles.

Eligible students cannot be current members of any YOCVA orchestra or ensemble and should be participating in their school-based music program.

Eligibility

The pool of possible applicants includes music students, between ages of 8 and 18, who reside in the city of Charlottesville or the surrounding counties (Albemarle, Augusta, Buckingham, Culpeper, Fluvanna, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson, Orange, or Rockingham) and municipalities. Nomination of a student must be made by the student’s music director/teacher. Only one student per school (public or private) may be nominated for the current season. However, if a school has both a band and string orchestra program, one string and one wind/brass student may be nominated from the same school.

Benefits

Students who are nominated and then successfully audition into an orchestra or ensemble will receive a full-tuition scholarship for the upcoming performance season. The scholarship will be named for the student’s school, and the awarding of the scholarship will featured in concert programs and on our website. Participation in a YOCVA orchestra/ensemble is meant to supplement a young student’s musical education and enrich their experience in their school-based programs, not replace it.

Requirements

Audition for placement in our organization is required. Nominated students must audition on an instrument that is included in our regular orchestra repertoire. Auditions are typically held in late spring of the current season, and regular YOCVA auditions rules and requirements apply.  If accepted, the student must participate for the full concert season.

Duration

The scholarship is awarded for one full concert season. If financial assistance is needed for membership in subsequent years, the student or parents can apply for need-based assistance.
